Recently, during our Quality Control audits, we have noticed a small percentage of staining/color loss/discoloration on towels and clothing. We have sent samples of these items to 3 different independent laboratories for testing. The results we received were eye opening and have alerted us to an apparent root cause to the problem. We have summarized the information below for you in this Customer Alert Bulletin.
Staining/Color Loss/Discoloration is appearing on my bath towels, face towels, and sometimes certain pieces of my regular clothing.
Acne medicine like Proactiv Solution, Clearasil, Stridex Pads, etc., contain acids and/or acidic compounds that can cause discoloration to fabrics. Benzoyl Peroxide is the most typical chemical compound used in these acne medications. The wash process makes the stains caused by these products to become evident.
- Use the same one or two towels when you clean your face.
- Wash, rinse and dry your hands thoroughly after using facial cleansers, particularly acne medicine.
- Avoid using your shirt to dry perspiration from your face.
If you go to Wikipedia and search on “Benzoyl Peroxide”, you can see an image of a sweatshirt that has the type of staining we are seeing on student clothing. Go to:
